Tell me no lies

Today I am reading a book called "Tell me no lies", written by Malorie Blackman. I got this book from a cousin of mine over in England when I visited last week - apparently they were reading it in one of his classes some time ago.

The book tells the story of two children, Gemma and Mike. They meet when Mike begins in Gemma's class. Gemma, who has no friends and feels as if she wears an invisible cloak, realises she has seen this new boy's face before, and is determined to figure out where. Mike, on the other hand, is hoping to blend in - to keep his past hidden and make a new start. The fact that Gemma seems to reconize him is the last thing he needs.

As the class embraces Mike, Gemma cannot understand why he is included the way she has never been. When she figures out where she has seen him before, she is not going to let Mike turn his back on her or ignore her like everyone else. Why, Mike has even told the biggest lie in the world in front of the class - a terrible, terrible lie. And he actually sees her - really sees her!

This is the beginning of a story about bullying. How being bullied can define a life, and maybe even how easy it is to become a bully oneself. It sure offers some ground for thoughts. And I love the ending.

A teaser for you:
"Not that Gemma was mad! Of course not! But her smile had meant that try as he might, Mike hadn't been able to ignore her. At last she'd found someone who couldn't force her to wear her cloak of invisibility."
